Cybercrime spreading feverishly across India


Cyber Crime is not rising slowly and steadily anymore, it is spreading feverishly across the Indian sub-continent, as the number of netizens is also on a rise, sources informed. Data released by the National Crime Records Bureau for 2009 reaffirms the statement above.

2009 saw 420 cases registered on charges of hacking computers and forging digital signatures under the Information Technology Act. It rose from 142 in 2006, the report stated.

Hacking ruled the roost within these 420 cases, where 233 cases were of alleged hacks. Pornography closely followed by 139 offences. They both were 74 and 88 respectively in 2006.

The total arrests in cyber crimes reportedly also went up from 154 in 2006 to 288 in 2009.

According to sources, Under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) a total of 276 cases, were registered during 2009 as compared to 176 such cases during 2008, an increase of 56.8 percent. Majority of the crimes out of276 cases fell under two categories -forgery and criminal breach of trust.

Cities like Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Ludhiana, Pune among others, saw high occurrence of cyber crime cases under the IT act with a total of 145 of the 178 cases.
