Reports: Toshiba To Showcase Android Honeycomb Tablet With Tegra 2 Chips At CES

Toshiba is reportedly preparing an Android tablet featuring a dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor for release sometime in the first half of this year.

Engadget said Toshiba, which currently has a 5 percent share of the global PC market according to Gartner, will showcase a tablet running the upcoming Google Android OS, code-named Honeycomb at CES this week. The report also says the device will include Nvidia's Tegra 2 chip, a mobile Optimus 2X dual-core CPU that includes Nvidia's GeForce GPU capability and mobile 1080p HD video processing.

Although the device's name is not yet known, Toshiba's tablet reportedly features a 10.1-inch, touch-screen display with 1280x800-pixel resolution, Toshiba Adaptive Display technology, and a 5MP rear camera as well as a 2MP front-facing camera. The 1.7-pound, 0.6-inch thick device will come with USB and HDMI jacks, a single mini-USB socket, an SD card slot, GPS and Bluetooth support, and a spill-resistant rubberized back.

According to The Associated Press, Toshiba expects to launch the tablet by the end of June at a price similar to that of Apple's iPad, which goes for between $499 and $829 depending on configuration. The release will mark the first time Toshiba has offered an Android tablet device in US, although the company says it plans to continue in this direction.

“We are going to embrace this category, and we are looking to develop a family of tablets,” Jeff Barney, General Manager, Digital Products, Toshiba America, told Reuters.

A number of manufacturers are adopting the Android platform for mobile devices. In May, Dell announced that it would launch an Android-based Dell Streak tablet. In July, Asus switched from Windows 7 to Google's Android OS for its EP101TC tablet PC.

Last month Andy Rubin, Vice President, Engineering at Google, who is in charge of the company's Android division, offered a demonstration of Honeycomb, which is expected to be optimized for tablets rather than smartphones, as it allows applications to adjust to the tablet's larger screen and split its views to multiple panes.

In addition to support for Google's Android Marketplace for downloading applications, Toshiba's tablet will include access to Toshiba Places, Toshiba's online marketplace for downloading content such as games, movies and music, as well as Toshiba BookPlace, its online market for buying e-books, according to The Associated Press.

Last month, several online reports said Nvidia's Tegra 2 processor is being adopted by several smartphone and tablet manufacturers and Digitimes reported that a number of them had placed orders for the Tegra 2, including HTC and Motorola.

According to Tech Trader Daily, Citigroup analyst Glen Young recently said Samsung has placed a large order for Tegra 2 chips with Nvidia.

HP India to Review the New PFR Policy

HP India has said that it is reviewing the recent changes in its flagship annual incentive program, Pay For Result (PFR).

At the beginning of November, which is the start of HP's financial year, the company announced that all special price clearance (SPC) deals will not be eligible for incentives under PFR. Many HP partners had raised concerns about the new rule suggesting it would significantly hurt their business profitability, as SPC deals including rate contracts, contribute a large chunk to their overall HP business.

However in an exclusive interview with CRN, Sunil Dutt, Vice President, Personal Systems Group, HP India said, "Many partners have raised their concerns with us about PFR, and based on this we have gone to APJ (Asia Pacific & Japan) team and asked them to review the new policy. We have presented the argument that executing business in a market as vast as India has different cost structures compared to doing the same kind of business in other emerging countries. I firmly believe that there needs to be certain incentives for partners for any type of activity involved with fulfilling HP’s business, and we have built a strong case with the APJ team. "

While Dutt said that it may be difficult to make any changes to PFR as it is a global program, he assured, "My sense is that the PFR program will not change as it’s a global program, but we have the option to introduce some form of partner incentive for SPC business, maybe outside the PFR umbrella. I am hopeful that we will address this issue soon."

Allied Digital to form Joint Venture with e-Cop

Allied Digital Services is in the process of inking a JV with e-Cop, a Singapore-based global provider of managed security services. The JV is likely to be announced later this month and Allied is likely to hold a majority stake in it.

With the JV, Allied and e-Cop will set up six Security Operations Centers (SOCs) in US, India, Singapore, Malaysia, China and Thailand.

A highly-placed source at Allied said that the company has had a long-standing partnership with e-Cop since 2007 and the JV will take the partnership to a new level.

"We already work with e-Cop to deliver services in India and the US. The JV will help us to expand to 20 countries. The focus of the new company will be to develop managed services around GRC (Governance, Risk and Compliance) for standards such as PCI, Sarbanes Oxley, and Basel II, among others. This is a fast growing segment with very few players," said the source.

In addition the source said that the JV will allow Allied and e-Cop to form a global threat intelligence network with six SOCs. The multi-regional threat intelligence network will provide threat notifications and associated advisory services based on data collated across these SOCs.

The JV will also sell branded and white-label services through strategic partners and will formalize the partner strategy once the company is formally launched.

Recently Intel Capital had announced an investment of Rs 32 crore in Allied Digital as a part of its global strategy to promote vPro technology. As per the agreement, Allied, through its US subsidiary will integrate Intel’s vPro processor technology with its remote infrastructure management offerings.

Nvidia To Enter CPU Market

Nvidia confirmed rumors that it's working on a new ARM-based CPU for desktops and servers, codenamed "Project Denver."
"This is one of the most strategic and important announcements ever made at Nvidia," said Jen-Hsun Huang, President and CEO, Nvidia, at CES. "I think this is a game changer."
Rumors had been swirling around Nvidia for some time concerning the company's plans to move from its traditional GPU business to CPUs. The new development will make Nvidia more of a challenger to Intel, which has been engaged in a bitter rivalry with Nvidia recently.
Huang said Project Denver will be the world's first ARM-based chip targeted at high-performance computing. While Nvidia didn't disclose many details about the forthcoming chip, the company did say that Project Denver would feature Nvidia's GPU technology integrated on the new CPU.
Nvidia also said Project Denver was the result of a new strategic partnership with ARM Holdings that allows Nvidia to base the new CPU cores on the current and future ARM architectures. In addition, Nvidia announced it has also licensed ARM's Cortex-A15 processor for future version of its Tegra mobile platform.
Huang emphasized ARM's amazing growth and cited the company's success with how rapidly the computing industry has changed from being PC-centric to focused more on mobile devices.
He added that ARM-based processor sales are greatly outpacing x86 processor sales, and that within a few years the number of ARM processors shipped will be greater than the number of x86 processors that have ever been shipped.

Memjet Debuts Fastest Color Printer

High-speed color printing technologies provider, Memjet announced a printer that prints up to 60 pages per minute. Touted as world’s fastest color office printer, the device was announced at the 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Bengaluru-based IT hardware and networking company, WeP Peripherals has been appointed as the official distributor and will bring the printer to India. Like other Memjet Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), WeP will incorporate these technologies into its own branded printers that will be powered by Memjet.

“We are delighted to bring multiple benefits of quality color, speed and affordability to our customer base,” said Ram N Agarwal, Managing Director and CEO of WeP. “The breakthrough Memjet technology truly is a game-changer and aligns with our customer focus to provide products developed with the best technologies at affordable prices. The Android version follows Dell's Windows 7 Venue Pro device launched in October. It features Dell's Stage user interface, a 4.1-inch AMOLED display with a curved Gorilla Glass protective covering, a Swype keyboard, and an 8-megapixel camera facing the back of the phone.
The Venue comes with access to Android's applications and widgets from the Android Market online, which the Stage interface makes relatively easy to navigate.
The Venue supports enterprise applications such as ActiveSync and QuickOffice, in addition to a number of entertainment features. The device emphasizes Web-browsing as well as mobile productivity in order to broaden its appeal.
Dell said that the Venue phone is powered by a 1GHz processor, although it has not offered the model name. Nor has the company offered pricing and availability for the device.
Dell has been active on the mobile front, offering a number of mobile embedded devices on both the Google Android, as well as Windows 7 and Windows Phone 7 devices. The Streak 7 and the Venue smartphone join the Streak 5 tablet, the Inspiron duo convertible tablet launched in November, and the Windows Phone 7 Venue Pro smartphone.
Despite the company's apparent emphasis on small form factor devices, Dell's mobile operations unit was discontinued in December, and its Chief Executive is leaving at the end of the month.

Asus Launches ABC

Asus has launched a new innovative partner communication program called ABC—Asus Business Connect—with an aim to improve communication with its partner community. Asus will provide 324 partners with its Videophone Touch AiGuru SV1T, a touch-enabled Skype videophone to enable them to communicate directly with the company’s senior management.
"This initiative will bridge the communication gap in smaller cities where we do not have enough field staff. Communication is the key to the success of any relationship and ABC is our step to initiate this communication with our valued partners. The communication channel through sub-distributor or distributor is not always the most effective way to reach to vendors and is sometimes too cumbersome for partners to partake in while engrossed in their busy schedule,” said Albert Tung, Managing Director, Asus India.
Asus is making an investment of Rs 51 lakh toward the installation of the videophones among 324 Elite Club partners in C, D and E Class cities. The first device was recently installed in Siliguri.
“Partners can get in touch with us for any issues, queries and feedback that they may have regarding our products or services. It is an initiative that will only be successful with the support of our partners as communication is always a two ways process,” added Tung.
The videophone—Touch AiGuru SV1T—allows making unlimited video Skype calls without a computer or additional hardware and software. It also features a full screen, touch-friendly and icon-based interface with Skype contact list which allows partners to call at a touch of a button. The device also supports voice dialing.

Intex Hikes Prices Across Board

With increased input costs triggered by rising commodities prices, Intex has announced a price rise of three percent across its product range that includes LCD monitors, peripherals, UPS and PCs.

“Apart from the prices rise of commodities, what has also impacted us is the depreciating value of dollar against the Chinese Yuan. We import components from China and a stronger Yuan means we have to pay more. The price hike is effective January 1,” said Vikram Kalia, GM, Peripheral and PC, Intex India.

According to Kalia, Intex is passing only a partial component of the cost hike on to the customer. "Overall our input costs have gone up by five to six percent, while the price increase is only three percent," he added.

This is the second time in the past six months that Intex had hiked prices. In August, the company had had announced a hike between five to eight percent due to the doubling of freight charges. “In 2010,  most IT companies did not react to the hike in freight charges but this time,  I think  the industry  will have to react as  the input costs have gone up substantially,” opined Kalia.

Gigabyte India Grows 37 Percent YoY

Motherboards manufacturer Gigabyte Technology reported a 37 percent year-over-year (YoY) revenue growth in Q4 FY10 in which its motherboard sales in many tier 2 and tier 3 regions grew by over 100 percent.
The company credited its partners who drove over 85 percent of the company business. Rajan Sharma, General Manager, Marketing and Sales, Gigabyte India, said, "We were able to leverage our distribution strength, spread and expertise to reach new regions and partners. Our local resources were spent more on channel building, education, training, marketing and brand-building activities that ensured sustainable and continuous demand generation.”
"In Q4, we also continued with the smooth transition of our business model to direct shipment, which began in Q3," he added. While over 2,000 resellers registered for the Q3 2010 Gigabyte Value Partner Program (GVPP), the company expects to increase its value partner base to over 2,500 with its current GVPP. Its post-sales infrastructure includes a service network spread over 100 locations across India and a dedicated RMA team.
Commenting on the 2011 plans Sharma said, "In 2011, we look forward to further increasing our presence in non-metros by focusing on product visibility, availability and channel penetration. We also intend to increase our Premium Partner base for smoother and efficient supply chain. As always, our focus will be on ensuring the right price /performance ratio for our products and customers. We are also working closely with our distributors to leverage their strengths in warehousing and supply to reach more locations."
Gigabyte’s national distributors include Avnet, Ingram Micro, Redington and Neoteric

Dell Launches Printers

Dell India has launched a range of monochrome and color laser printers priced between Rs 6,000 and 17,000, targeted at SOHO and office workgroups.
The entry-level offering, Dell 1130, is a monochrome laser capable of printing up to 19 PPM, and priced at Rs 6,500. The network enabled model, Dell 1130n, capable of printing 23 PPM, is priced at Rs 16,000.
At Rs 11,000, Dell has launched the multifunction monochrome laser model 1133 with a speed of 22 PPM and a monthly duty cycle of 12,000 pages per month.
Dell 1250C, priced at Rs 17,000, is claimed to be the world’s smallest single-function A4 color laser-class printer using LED printing technology. It has a speed of up to 12 PPM for mono and 10 PPM for color printing and has a maximum monthly duty cycle of 30,000 pages.
Spelling out the strategy for its newly launched printer business, Sanjay Yadav, Country Head, Retail, Dell India, said, “The addition of printers to our portfolio, and the fact they will primarily be available through the channel, will add significant value to our partners’ business. Our channel focus is based on the premise of making technology more accessible to customers. This will increase the ability of our partners to offer total solutions to their customers.”
Vishal Tripathi, Principal Analyst, Gartner India believes that Dell has the capacity to give printer OEMs tough competition in targeted segment. “The timing of Dell's printers launch is apt. They have already gained the No 1 spot in the PC market, and have the momentum going for them,” he opined.
Dell is known to have an OEM agreement with Lexmark for manufacturing its branded printers and aftermarket supplies.

MicroStrategy Claims A New Breakthrough

MicroStrategy, a pure play provider of business intelligence (BI) software, announced that in benchmark tests of its latest software release, MicroStrategy 9.0.2 can support more than 100,000 active users while delivering average response times under two seconds.

According to a press release from the company, a 4-node clustered configuration of MicroStrategy Intelligence Server containing a total of 32 CPU cores delivered a power rating of 560 KiloCycles, which equates to 560,000 round-trip queries per hour. This query volume was sustained while supporting over 100,000 active users, which can be extrapolated to a total user population of 500,000 people. The tests ran by using MicroStrategy 9.0.2 installed on commodity Intel-based hardware with the Red Hat Linux ES operating system, at a retail price of $63,500 for the 4-node clustered configuration.

During the test sequence, the MicroStrategy Intelligence Server demonstrated an almost exactly proportional increase in capacity as additional server nodes were added to the clustered configuration. In single-node operation, the MicroStrategy Intelligence Server with 8 CPU cores delivered a power rating of 147 KiloCycles, supporting the traffic volume of over 26,000 active users. With two nodes, the MicroStrategy Intelligence Server with 16 CPU cores delivered 284 KiloCycles, supporting the traffic volume of approximately 51,000 active users.  A three-node configuration containing 24 CPU cores delivered 423 KiloCycles, supporting the traffic volume of approximately 76,000 active users.

"Companies today are faced with supporting escalating data volumes and providing fast and easy data access for business decision makers," said Sanju Bansal, MicroStrategy's Chief Operating Officer. "As our tests show, MicroStrategy allows companies to deliver greater value from their existing hardware and maximize incremental hardware to deploy more business intelligence applications to more people."

Remarked SMPS Causes Issues for System Builders

Assemblers are complaining that many mainstream enclosures available in the market today across brands don't work with Intel Core i7 platform. They claim that this is because the Switch Model Power Supply (SMPS) available with the enclosures are remarked and don't meet the power requirement of Core i7 PC.

“Recently we assembled a few PCs with Core i7 and a dedicated 1GB graphic card in an enclosure from a popular brand with a SMPS having a power rating of 400W. And although the PCs based on Core i7 with dedicated graphics has a power requirement of 220W, the SMPS didn't work. When we trouble-shooted the matter we realized that the SMPS was remarked and while it showed a power rating of 400W, actually it's power profile was less than 220W thus creating issue for the PCs," said RV Ravichandran, Partner, IBS Systems, Bengaluru.

However not everyone is surprised. "This is a known secret in the industry that many cabinets come with remarked SMPS. While the SMPS show a power rating of 400-450W on it, the actual power rating is between 160 and 180W,” said MA Mannan, Country Manager, Corsair India. "Many customers and resellers have started realizing this since Core i5 and Core i7 processors along with graphics cards require in excess of 200W."

Sunil Kumar, CEO, Lampo Computers in Bengaluru, observed, “An average system builder is not aware that there is a strong influx of remarked cabinets in the market and hence it is important that they test the SMPS before buying. You have all types of cabinets available starting from Rs 750 and many a times resellers go after lower priced products which more often than not are remarked.”

"System builders need to be educated on this aspect as having a good quality power supply is important for the functioning of the PC and its lifecycle. All component vendors need to drive this point home with their channel,” added Mannan.

HCL Wins Big Education Projects From HP, Kerala Govt

HCL Infosystems has bagged multi-crore deals from Education Departments in Kerala and Himachal Pradesh (HP).

With the merger, Canon India expects to generate Rs 100 crore revenue from this segment in 2011. The company has also formed two new business divisions to focus on this segment and appointed separate heads—Puneet Datta to manage Océ Production and Printing division; and Rajeev Tewari to lead the Wide-format Imaging division. It has also put in place a dedicated team of 50 sales and service personnel to drive this business.

Commenting on the alliance, Alok Bharadwaj, Senior Vice President, Canon India, said, “The size of the digital printing industry in India is Rs 1,000 crore. Presently there are around one lakh offset printers and 1,000 print shop providers. The digital printing industry in India is expected to grow at 25 percent year on year. Océ, being a world leader in various printing segments including the production printing domain, will supplement Canon’s processes and infrastructure. IBM India to Roll Out Flexible CIO

IBM India is in the process of rolling out an innovative service called Flexible CIO for mid-market organizations that can’t afford to hire an experienced CIO.
“The unique service will be rolled out to help mid-market companies take strategic decision with regards to their IT investments. We will have a team of highly experienced consultants who will work with these companies to help them outline their IT strategies and plans, Customers can opt to pay either per hour or per project,” said Jyothi Satyanathan, VP, Mid-size Businesses and Inside Sales, IBM India.
Satyanathan said that services are a key component of IBM’s new mid-market go-to-market formulated in 2010. “Providing services-led solutions is critical in the mid-market. In our estimate, services account for almost 65 percent of the total mid-market opportunity. We need to help our partners achieve greater sales potential by leveraging services and services-led solutions,” added Satyanathan.
In the past six months IBM has launched six types of services keeping in mind the mid-market requirements. These include Data Mobility, Storage Optimization and Integration services; Managed Resiliency services; Maintenance and Technical support services; and Site and Facilities management services.
“All these services have been developed and packaged keeping in mind the Indian mid-market scenario. For instance, the managed resiliency services have been packaged specifically for small co-operative banks that are mandated to have a data recovery (DR) setup as per RBI regulation,” explained Satyanathan.
So far, IBM has activated 30 partners to sell services. “Many STG partners, enabled to sell services, have seen an increase in their hardware sales. Offering complementary services is helping them differentiate from the competition and creating deep-selling opportunities,” says Satyanathan. “Two mid-market partners, Team Computers and Pentagon have done good services business in the past two quarters.”
IBM has also evolved special incentive and training programs to enable partners sell and deliver services effectively. “We have rolled out co-marketing programs to drive sales, and have integrated the services portfolio with our small deals management system,” he informs.
IBM has evolved three different models to ensure that partners of all sizes get to participate in the services play. Under the first option, a reseller can be an opportunity identifier, wherein they need to generate qualified leads, help IBM in closing them, and earn commission. Second, he resells the services but it’s delivered by IBM Global Technology Services. The partner gets to set his price to customers and do the billing, and thus determine his profits. In the third option, the partner can sell the services and co-deliver it with GTS.
Over the next six months, IBM plans to add two more services which include Tivoli Live and Connect M.
In 2011, IBM’s goal is to have more partners’ co-deliver services. “In Q1 2011, we have planned for 120 hours of tech enablement for 10 key partners. The target in 2011 is to route 80 percent of mid-market services through partners,” informed Satyanathan.

eMachine Brand Grew 100 Percent In 2010

Acer’s eMachine brand targeted at the price-conscious consumer segment has witnessed a 100 percent YoY growth in 2010. It recorded average sales of 8,000 units per month during 2010, compared to an average of 4,000 units per month in 2009.

Commenting on the growth of the eMachine brand, S Rajendran, CMO, Acer India said, “The multi-brand strategy has worked quite well for us. The eMachine sales figures show that we have gone beyond our expectation and delivered more than the targeted figure. We hit an average of close to 8,000 units of eMachine notebooks and netbooks per month, while on the desktop front; we achieved an average monthly sale of 2,000 units.”

Rajendran said that the reasons for eMachine doing well are its focused distribution strategy and competitive pricing. “Exclusively distributing eMachine mobile PCs through Supertron have worked well. At its price point it’s been doing really well in the hinterlands. Also we floated several exciting schemes around the year which pushed up the sales.”

Highlighting the type of customer promotions Acer has been doing around eMachine, Rajendran said, “We currently have a scheme running in partnership with MTS in Rajasthan and Delhi. The eMachine model with N450 Atom with 1GB memory, 250GB hard drives and pre-bundled with a Windows 7 Starter edition is available for an MRP of Rs 12,999. Customers buying this with MTS broadband modem get Rs 2,000 cash back thus making the customer pricing at Rs 10,999. Schemes around eMachine have been local and target varying consumer demographics in different geographies.”

Acer expects the momentum to continue in 2011 as well. “eMachine will continue to be our focus in 2011 and we expect to sell more than 12,000 units per month in the year. Our strategy will be to further penetrate the upcountry market,” he claimed.

Rajendran said Acer isn’t averse to tapping the telco channel for eMachine to achieve its goal of doubling the market coverage. “We will continue with the same distribution model—Supertron will be exclusive for notebooks and netbooks while Salora, Ingram and Redington will distribute desktops. But we expect our distributors to tap the mobile channel,” he averred.

Rajendran said Acer will continue to have a limited product portfolio for eMachine mobile PCs. “Presently we have one model based on Intel Atom, two models on Pentium Dual Core and one model on Core i3. We don’t want to expand this portfolio. We want to keep things simple for our distributors and partners,” he informed.
