Su-Kam set to enter US market

MUMBAI: Leading manufacturer of power inverters, UPS and batteries Su-Kam Power Systems Ltd will soon foray into the US market and has already designated some distributors to cater to its needs there.
"We have appointed three distributors in the US and now the company's major focus would be growing in the US, Canadian and Australian markets," Su-Kam CEO Kunwer Sachdev told media.
The Rs 200 crore Delhi-based company is in talks with mid-sized retail chains in the US to market its products, Sachdev said, declining to name them. Su-Kam already has presence in other Asian, African, Middle Eastern and Pacific region markets. Sachdev did not rule out possible acquisitions in the US.
Early this year, the $200 million Reliance India Power Fund, sponsored jointly by the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group and the Singapore-based Temasek Holdings (Temasek), picked up a 20 per cent stake in Su-Kam for Rs 45 crore. The funds will be used to fuel its expansion plans.
Apart from overseas expansion, Su Kam will also increase its domestic production with its new SMF Battery plant at Baddi in Himachal Pradesh. "The Baddi plant will be commissioned by June 2007 with a capacity of about six lakh batteries," Sachdev said adding that it was set up with a total investment of Rs 80 crore.
Su-Kam already has a manufacturing facility in Gurgaon. This year, the company bagged major orders from Reliance and Essar and is also in talks with leading telecom companies to instal inverters on all major cell sites.
Su-Kam is the first Indian company to obtain the Conformities Europeans certification from Det Norske Veritas, a Norwegian certification company, for inverters. This apart, Su-Kam has also forayed into futuristic areas like solar photovoltaic, wind energy and hybrid systems.
