It’s hard to imagine squeezing all the guts required for color laser printing into a package that measures only 15.4 inches wide, 13.5 inches deep and 10.4 inches high. But somehow Samsung did it.

The Samsung CLP-300 is the smallest and lightest color laser printer available, and it’s hands-down the cutest as well. The printer weighs only 30 pounds. Making anything smaller than the CLP-300 is likely impossible, simply considering the size of the paper it handles.

The CLP-300 features a 600 x 600 dpi optical resolution that can be enhanced up to 2400 x 600 dpi. Powered by a 300MHz processor, the printer comes standard with 32 Mbytes of memory, which can be upgraded to a maximum of 64 Mbytes. The printer has a duty cycle of 24,200 pages per month. It’s compatible with Windows, Macintosh and Linux operating systems.

Samsung is a world leader in building laser printer engines for other vendors, and its expertise in printing technology really shows in the design of the CLP-300. Samsung engineers started from scratch in designing the CLP-300’s tiny four-pass color print engine. Color cartridges are good for up to 1,000 pages, and the black toner cartridge, which is larger than the color ones, is good for up to 2,000 pages.

The imaging drum, which is good for 20,000 monochrome pages, or 12,500 color pages, costs about $110. A replacement waste toner bottle costs less than $20. Other than the consumables, there are no accessories available for this printer. The printer carries a one-year, advanced limited replacement warranty.

Samsung claims quieter operation with its exclusive NO NOIS print engine, and the printer did seem to be one of the quietest laser printers that the CRN Test Center has reviewed. The printer was tested for performance and image quality using a stopwatch and select files from the Spencer & Associates Printer Test Suite, a collection of documents and photos designed to push printers to their limits. Image quality is quite good, and it’s certainly as good as many larger units.

Rated at 17 ppm in monochrome with the first page out in 14 seconds, the CLP-300 printed a 10-page monochrome Word document in 43 seconds, with the first page out in 11 seconds. Also rated at 4 ppm in color with the first page out in 26 seconds, a 10-page Word document with color headings took 2 minutes 37 seconds to print, with the first page out in 23 seconds. So the CLP-300 meets its rated specifications.

Epson’s New Range of Budget Printers

Digital imaging vendor Epson has launched Epson Stylus T11 inkjet printer, targeted at entry-level users such as students and first-time buyers. The printer blends with high quality prints.

The Epson Stylus T11 is a compact-sized low price printer available for both printer and ink cartridges. The printer vendor has used the same technology found on high-end printers wherein the print resolution reaches up to 5760 dots per inch.  It has a Micro Piezo technology that prints 22 pages per minute, and is also capable of printing 4R photos in under a minute. 

It also uses Epson Dura Brite Ultra ink that is used to guard prints against liquid spills and prevents colours from fading prematurely and a four-colour individual ink cartridge system eliminating the need to change the entire ink cartridge system.

The printer is available for Rs 2,199 and each ink cartridge costs Rs 250. The vendor has also announced that it will bundle softwares like Epson Photo Enhance, Easy Photo Print and Red Eye Correction with the printers.
