Inverting Power Cuts

When he was 15, and studying in standard X, he would go around localities in Delhi on a bicycle selling pens. Today, he's the reason why many households in India, and especially those in north India, find their summers bearable when power breaks down.
Kunwer Sachdev is the man behind Su-Kam, the inverter brand that's become a household name in many parts of the country. Till Su-Kam came, it was impossible to depend on an inverter because inverter quality was terrible. So people had generators, which was more expensive and also fouled the air, or had both an inverter and generator, so that they could switch to the latter when the former failed.

Sachdev had such an inverter at home. "It was troubling me a lot. One day I opened it up and saw what a mess it was inside. I decided to work on it to improve it." That was the beginning of Su-Kam inverters. Sachdev looked at some inverters from developed markets, figured out the basic building blocks of those, and created an inverter to suit Indian conditions. "In developed countries, inverters are used mostly in solar power and for powering caravans. Those inverters are very different from the kind that is needed to power homes. Besides, India has voltage fluctuation issues, and the neutral in our electrical socket tends to be bad. We had to make our inverters work even in such conditions," Sachdev says.
R&D was central to all that Su-Kam did. Today, its inverter is a high-tech product, with microcontrollers, digital signal processors and software to manage the entire system. "Earlier it was all analog, now it's all digital. In microseconds, the system decides what to do if a power spike happens. In analog based systems, the response rate is slow; in digital it's substantially faster. So failure rates are low," says Sachdev. He thinks that Su-Kam must be the highest patent filer in the inverter industry in the world.

Su-Kam Supports Business Growth with Integrated Enterprise Resource Planning System

Su-Kam Supports Business Growth with Integrated Enterprise Resource Planning System
"We experienced a dramatic improvement in inventory management, and expect similar benefits when we begin using the financial, purchasing, and order management modules in earnest. Information sharing has been greatly enhanced and there are fewer misunderstandings between departments." - Shashi Kumar, Deputy General Manager, Information Technology, Su-Kam Power Systems
Founded in 1992, Su-Kam Power Systems Limited is India's biggest supplier of power inverters. The company manufactures a range of power supply products, including inverters, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, batteries, and solar products. These products are distributed through a network of 400 distributors and 5,000 dealers around the world.
As its business expanded, Su-Kam realized it could no longer rely on its aging accounting system for financial management. The company also lacked systems to manage inventory, purchasing, customer orders, and manufacturing schedules, leading to miscommunication between departments and inefficient workflows.
In 2006, Su-Kam engaged Oracle Certified Partner Sonata Information Technology to implement a new enterprise resource planning system based on a range of Oracle E-Business Suite applications. The new system integrates every aspect of Su-Kam's operations for the first time in its history, ensuring a smooth flow of information across the organization.
"We experienced a dramatic improvement in inventory management, and expect similar benefits when we begin using the financial, purchasing, and order management modules in earnest," said Shashi Kumar, deputy general manager of information technology, Su-Kam Power Systems. "Information sharing has been greatly enhanced and there are fewer misunderstandings between departments."
Improved Information Sharing
Sharing information across the organization was one of the biggest challenges facing Su-Kam prior to implementing Oracle. The company used Microsoft Excel spreadsheets to record inventory, purchase orders, customer orders, and other business information. This made it extremely difficult for staff in different departments to access the data they needed to complete their jobs. Vital information often went missing, jeopardizing Su-Kam's ability to provide optimum service.
The integrated Oracle system ensures data entered at one point is available across the organization, eliminating the need for multiple data entry and minimizing inaccuracies. Automated workflows ensure a customer or purchase order is routed to the right department for immediate attention.
"Our finance group is one division that will benefit immensely from the Oracle system," said Kumar. "At the moment, they do not have easy access to the information they need to make accurate, on-time payments.
"Once procurement staff begin entering purchase orders into the Oracle system, the data will be available to our accounts payable staff, helping them organize prompt payments.
"This will streamline procurement processes and ensure vendors are paid on time," he said.
Better Inventory Control
Su-Kam has three warehouses across India to store the components it uses to build its products. Previously, it was difficult to find out the number and type of components held at each warehouse, as the company relied on Excel spreadsheets and its basic accounting system to track inventory.
When Su-Kam completed a physical inventory count as part of the migration to Oracle, it discovered a 25% discrepancy between what was actually in the warehouses and what the accounting system and spreadsheets recorded. "We counted our inventory three times and each time we found items that had not been recorded," said Kumar.
Oracle Inventory provides Su-Kam with an accurate way to track stock at each of its warehouses. As new components arrive from suppliers, the details are entered into the system. The information is accessible online to staff at the head office and all warehouses.
"We can now see what parts we have, where they are held, and how many there are of a certain type," said Kumar. "More careful inventory management will help us reduce costs and waste."
As a company operating in a fast-changing industry, Su-Kam is constantly innovating and introducing new products to the market. Components used in older products became redundant and accumulated in the company's warehouses. According to Kumar, Su-Kam did not have the time or resources to deal with the old stock.
"Most of the time we didn't even know that this stock existed," he said. "The parts were of no use to us, but we could still sell them for 75% of their original purchase price. In future, the Oracle system will help us to identify stock we no longer need so we can offer it for sale."
Enhanced Order Management
In the past, Su-Kam used Excel spreadsheets to record customer orders. The spreadsheets would be faxed or e-mailed to the head office, where the vice president of sales would approve the order and route it to the manufacturing division. This manual, paper-based method was risky as orders could go missing or become lost in a flood of requests.
Customer orders are now entered into the Oracle system, allowing the vice president of sales to monitor them in real time. Once approved, the order is automatically routed to the production department, where staff can check if there are enough products on hand to meet the order, or if they have to raise a production request.
"The most obvious benefit of streamlined order management is improved customer service," said Kumar. "We can ensure all orders are met and brief clients on the status of their order when they ask. We are now a more efficient, customer-focused organization."
Future Plans
Once the system is bedded down and users become more familiar with it, Su-Kam will begin using Oracle Discrete Manufacturing to manage production schedules and Oracle Advanced Pricing to track discount schemes and institutional pricing models. It is also considering upgrading its human resources and payroll systems.
Why Oracle?
Su-Kam was searching for an ERP package that was widely used and highly regarded by the manufacturing sector. The final choice came down to Oracle and SAP.
"The Oracle and SAP solutions offered similar functionality, but Oracle was head and shoulders above SAP when it came to service," said Kumar. "When we asked for a meeting, Oracle came to us. When we asked for a demonstration, the company organized for us to see the product in action.
"The initial response and ongoing support from Oracle has been excellent," he said. "The Oracle team has been very accommodating throughout the project."
Why Sonata Information Technology?
This was the first Su-Kam had installed an ERP system and it decided to engage an implementation partner to manage the project and provide strategic advice. The company evaluated a number of systems integrators based on their experience, business understanding, and geographical reach. It selected Oracle Certified Partner Sonata Information Technology to oversee the implementation.
"Sonata had completed a large number of ERP projects so we were confident the company had the skills to install our system quickly," said Kumar. "It also has offices throughout India, ensuring our 30 branches across India can access support quickly.
"We also received good feedback about the company from Oracle," he added. "Sonata was highly responsive and guided us properly through the project. We were pleased with the results."
Implementation Process
Su-Kam established a core project team consisting of Sonata technicians and representatives from each department. Feedback from each representative was incorporated into the system design. The customization, installation, and testing was completed by Sonata. The implementation kicked off in May 2006 and was completed six months later, enabling Su-Kam to go live in November.
According to Kumar, the biggest challenge was convincing certain staff members to adopt the new system. "Some employees were used to doing things a certain way, whether it is using a register or Excel spreadsheets to record information," he explained. "We ran an extensive training program to help them transition to Oracle."
A core user from each department was responsible for training one member of their staff, usually a person who had demonstrated a quick understanding of the system. This person, called a 'functionality champion', was then given the task of training their colleagues.
"Response to the system has been positive, even among those who were initially resistant to the change," said Kumar. "Staff are now starting to see the benefits of the Oracle solution."
Advice from Su-Kam Power Systems
" Ensure the entire company understands how an ERP system works. Many users may be resistant to change, and educating them on the benefits of the system will help promote faster acceptance.
" Incorporate user feedback into the final system design. This ensures the system will deliver the functionality they require to do their jobs.

Indian power solutions find favour in South Africa

Johannesburg, May 26 (IANS) The power alternatives offered by several Indian companies that exhibited at the annual Computer Faire here have found favour with South African businesses, according to organisers. Although only seven Indian manufacturers participated in the 30th Computer Faire, which ended here at the weekend, as compared to 30 last year, business had been brisk and lots of leads were being followed up by these companies, according to Vikas Gupta, deputy director of the Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council, who led the Indian delegation.
“Companies like Su-Kam Power Systems, Genus Power Infrastructures and others have seen the opportunities that South Africa presents, with its current power crisis,” Gupta told IANS.
He was referring to the fact that an unexpected surge in demand for power has caught the national energy supplier Eskom offguard and forced it to resort to load shedding in recent months.
“People here are looking for solutions and in the computer industry, with its huge need to ensure that servers and desktops remain powered up in outages, made us come here to show India’s expertise in this area.
“But we are also showing our expertise in specialised software areas where India has firmly entrenched itself in South Africa as not being a one-time seller, having shown a genuine interest and proving that Indian products are of superior quality with no compromises, yet remaining cost-effective solutions,” Gupta added.
Dhananjay Sharma, deputy general manager (global business division) of Su-Kam, told IANS that the demand for its products in South Africa had shifted from generators to invertors as consumers want to be environment friendly.
Vishay Singh, Southern African agent for Su-Kam, said that at the height of the power crisis here, his company could not import fast enough to keep up with the demand for generators and invertors.
“Business here has also been looking at alternative energy and Su-Kam in particular is well-geared for this with its modular solutions such as solar and wind energy options.
“Online UPS demand has been great in both the business and government sector, with more than 10,000 units sold in just six months,” Singh said.
Genus Power Infrastructures Ltd, another Indian exhibitor at the Computer Faire, was also trying to expand into the UPS and invertor market after having already found an agent here for its meter products.
“We have seen a lot of interest from local businessmen and are hoping that we can sign up an agent here soon,” Ashish Agarwal, assistant manager for International Business, told IANS.

Su-Kam Launches Pure Sine Wave Home UPS System

Su-Kam, leaders in the power back-up industry and widely known for their premium high quality products have introduced Shiny Home UPS. The Shiny Home UPS provides 100% pure AC power equivalent to grid power. The Sine Wave back-up power supply ensures that your household appliances are protected from damage and extends their life, too.

Its superior HCLC (High Cut/Low Cut) Technology provides complete and constant protection to your appliances in case of any irregularities and disturbances in the grid supply, like short circuits, high voltage, low voltage and overload. Expensive and sensitive equipment like TVs, home theatres, satellite dishes, computers, printers, copiers and fax machines are spared from damage. This increases the longevity of your appliances.

Extra Energy-efficiency

Shiny is equipped with the SMPS based charger with the high power factor which minimizes the amount of AC power required to charge the batteries, thereby reducing power consumption. The SMPS (Switched-Mode Power Supply) charger provides pure DC supply to the batteries and hence enhances battery life with better control and response.

The SMPS based charger is 25% more efficient as compared to SCR chargers and is smaller in size, generating less heat.

Extra Back-up

The Shiny has a slider switch that allows you to choose between UPS mode and Wide UPS mode. In the UPS mode, the input voltage window is 185 to 260 V. This is ideal for powering computers and other sensitive appliances, offering longer back-up as compared to conventional UPS systems.

In the Wide UPS mode, the input voltage window is 105 to 275 V, suitable for running normal loads and non-sensitive appliances.

Fuzzy Logic Control Technology

Su-Kam’s advanced Fuzzy Logic Control charging technology senses the requirement of the battery and controls the charging process accordingly. This technology ensures:

· Huge Savings on Electricity

· Longer Battery Life

· Reduced Water Topping

Automatic Over-Load Sensing

The system provides notification through alarms and LED lights on the front panel. Incase of overload, Su-Kam’s System Overload Alarm resets the Home UPS automatically. The system will retry 8 times to run the existing load. Moreover, the repeated beep alarm gives the user adequate time to reduce the load without having to shut down the system and the user does not have to go to the UPS to reset the button for overload. In case the load is still not reduced, the system will shut down automatically.

Silent Operation

Shiny automatically senses the power failure and switches to battery mode silently, without letting you even notice that the power supply has failed.

Shiny lights up your home and keeps your fans whirring with no humming sound.

Compatibility with Batteries

The two-way slider selection switch gives you the option to select any battery type and charging. This improves the back-up quality and enhances battery life.

Su-Kam Power plans Rs 250-cr expansion

Chennai, Jan. 18 Gurgaon-based Su-Kam Power Systems Ltd has drawn up a Rs 250-crore expansion plan during the next fiscal. The Rs 430-crore company, a major player in the inverter and UPS system market, recently set up a battery plant in Baddi involving an investment of Rs 100 crore to produce 5,000 batteries a day, said Mr Kunwer Sachdev, CEO of the company. With this, it currently has four plants (three in Baddi and one in Gurgaon).
Mr Sachdev, who was in Chennai to address the audience at TiEcon 2008 in his capacity as a successful first-generation entrepreneur, said the company may raise the funds through equity placement.
Su-Kam’s products are present in over 50 countries globally; last year, its export turnover was Rs 27 crore. The company is now targeting the US market. “We recently dispatched our first consignment to the US,” he said. Betting big on the US market, it hopes to take its export income to Rs 75 crore and the total turnover to Rs 590 crore during the current fiscal.
During the last financial year, Reliance India Power Fund of ADAG and Temasek Holdings of Singapore invested $ 5 million each. Together they hold 19 per cent.

After inverters, Su Kam offers UPS

After inverters, Su Kam offers UPS

Keeping the Indian market in view, Su Kam has launched a range of new digital UPS systems ranging from 600VA to 2000VA.The system can run as a stabilizer even without a battery and in case of deep decharge, due to non-use for a long time, it will still start up.

"Most UPS come with a RS 232 port to connect the UPS to the computer, but with no bundled software to use it. We give the users a powerful software that allows their computer to save files and shut down, send emails or SMS to the users to warn them in case something goes wrong," said Kunwar Sachdeva, MD of Su Kam.
The price for the 600VA for the end-user is Rs.2,300. However, the 750VA will be cheaper than the other two individual 600Vas. The 1000VA can handle three computers and will be priced cheaper than the total cost of three individual 600VAs.
Su Kam has already started exporting these UPS to Nepal and Sri Lanka and has further plans to export to Africa and some other parts of Asia.
