ISODA Sets Impressive Agenda For Tech Summit

Infotech Software Dealers Association IISODA has lined up an impressive agenda for it’s first-ever tech ummit to be held at the Holiday Inn, Silom, Bangkok between January 20-23, 2011.

To be attended by 80 of its leading software VAR members, the tech aummit is being supported by Microsoft and Symantec as Platinum sponsors; CA Technologies, Trend Micro, Hitachi and Quest as Gold sponsors; NetCore and SteelEye as Silver sponsors; and Choice Solutions and MIEL as member sponsors.

Outlining the broad agenda of the summit, Sudarsan Ranganathan, Regional Secretary, South, ISODA, said, “We want the first tech summit to be a trendsetter and address a broad range of issues from technology to business with an aim to take the software channel to the next level of evolution. The theme for the summit is Transform, Organize and Profit.”

On the technology front, the key topic of discussion will be cloud computing and the opportunities and challenges it presents to the software channel. Other topics will include managed services, virtualization, and security.

On the business side the Tech Summit will discuss the key issue of double taxation and impact of the recent Finance Ministry notification of brining all type of canned software under the excise-based MRP structure. “ISODA owes its genesis to the issue of double taxation and hence it is unavoidable but this summit is to go beyond the taxation issue and look.  We will discuss the implications of the new paradigm in IT and based on that also decide the future course of action. Having vendors at the forum will help in this process as they can extend their support,” said Sudarsan.

Partner collaboration will be another key agenda. “One of the key elements of ISODA’s charter is to increase collaboration between its members. While many of our members are already collaborating on multi-location projects, our objective is to formalize it to enable them to collaborate more frequently and within a prescribed framework. We have already created a list of partners with their specializations and have charted the key guiding principles in terms of price list for pre-sales and post-sales services support which will make the process smoother,” elaborated Sudarsan.

Services in all forms whether it be cloud services or managed services will be another focal point. “Services will lead the way for most enterprise VARs in the coming years. The session on services will be in depth and we will discuss best practices and also have a goal-setting session where many members will state their goals for the 2011 on the services front and elaborate on their plans to get there.”

Sudarsan also said that to avoid vendors from making standard product presentation, ISODA has put a three-member team consisting of Jagannathan Kallakurchi, Vipul Datta and Prashanth Subramaniam, who are meeting the vendors and telling them what is expected out of their presentations.

Non-IT Company Dumps Products In Mumbai

Supreme Infrastructure, a non-IT and public-listed company, has allegedly dumped IT products in the Mumbai market, at prices 20-30 percent below the market operating price. Supreme has allegedly dumped inventory worth Rs 12-14 crore in the past four to six weeks. These include products from HP, Asus, LG, Kaspersky and Microsoft hardware, according to informed market sources.

Ketan Patel, CEO, Creative Peripherals and Committee Member, TAIT informed, “We have investigated the matter as a distributor of Microsoft hardware products and also at the level of TAIT based on complaints from a few members. What has emerged is that Supreme had sourced IT products from a company called eOffice Planet—now part of Office Depot—to supply to MMRDA. For some reason this product wasn’t supplied to Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and instead landed back in the open market. We don’t know the reason behind why products meant for MMRDA were sold in the open market.”

Patel said that Creative had in fact supplied a large number of Microsoft hardware to eOffice Planet at Rs 600 per mouse and keyboard combo. “These products came back in the open market and began selling at Rs 450 per unit. That’s what raised our eyebrows.”

Patel informed that TAIT has also investigated the matter after few members reported dumping. “TAIT did the investigation and found the above facts. More than the dumping of products we were concerned about TAIT members who may have supplied the products to eOffice Planet. So we checked with all our members if they had received their payments. Fortunately, Creative and KK Overseas, both who had supplied products have received their payments. So we didn’t pursue the matter further,” he opined.

A Mumbai-based reseller, who didn’t want to be named, admitted to having purchased around Rs 60 lakh of products from the company. “The reason we bought products from Supreme is because they were duty-paid with India warranty; and prices offered were almost 30 percent less than the distributor transfer price,” said the reseller.

When contacted Supreme’s Company Secretary Vijay Joshi said his company has no interest in IT business and that the allegations brought forward by CRN about the company dumping IT products in the market has absolutely no basis. “I am completely shocked with such speculations and allegations against our company. We are a listed company and such news could have negative impact. We are a real estate and infrastructure developer and have no interest in IT business whatsoever. Probably it’s some other company having a similar name that is involved,” he said.

Patel said that Creative has verified that ePlanet Office sold products sourced from his company to Supreme Infrastructure for a MMRDA project. Supreme’s Web site lists MMRDA as one of the large projects it is executing currently.

Acer Expands Enterprise Business Team

In a bid to capitalize on the massive opportunities in the public infrastructure sector, Acer India has set up a separate team under its enterprise division. Aman Nagar has been appointed to lead the team.

"The public infrastructure sector in India is emerging as the biggest opportunity with several ambitious projects such as Adhaar (UID), computerization and automation of NREGA, and modernization of the postal department being lined up by the government. Hence we have created a separate team to focus on this sector," said S Rajendran, CMO, Acer India.

According to Rajendran, over the next three years, the UID project is expected to spend $600 million only on clients for capturing the biometric identity of the vast Indian population. Similarly, the Department of Posts has earmarked a budget of $4 billion for the modernization of over 1.3 lakh post offices across the country.

"The computerization of NREGA to bring in transparency in the execution of the entire scheme to the last mile is another big project that the government has outlined for investment," explained Rajendran.

Acer also expects automation in the power sector to be a big growth driver in the public infrastructure space, over the next three to four years. 

Acer's Enterprise division, headed by R Jagannath, consists of four teams--education, government, corporate and the newly formed team for public infrastructure. 

Trend Micro To Pump Up Volume Business

Trend Micro aims to triple its volume business and has recently signed Neoteric Infomatique as national distributor.

“We never focused on driving the volume business in India till now, but we want to change that. Our strategies for volume business are designed for the long term,” said Amit Nath, Country Manager, India and Saarc, Trend Micro.

While on the consumer front Trend Micro has an abysmal market share, in the small business segment it has been doing reasonably well.

“In small business space we are currently adding close to 600-700 new customers every quarter. The plan is to more than triple it to 1,500-2,000 customers per quarter. The partnership with Neoteric, and the launch of the latest edition of Titanium and Worry Free range will help us get there,” he said.

Nath added that Titanium has been priced very competitively keeping in mind the price sensitivity of the Indian consumer. “Since its launch, Titanium has been getting rave reviews. We have priced it at Rs. 1,200 per user per year—which is very competitive in terms of price-performance, when compared to its peers. The new edition of Worry Free also includes several new features and is much lighter.”

Trend Micro plans to triple its partner base and has identified 25 tier-2 and tier-3 cities where it will soon embark on a major reseller enrollment program along with Neoteric. “We have lined up a series of events in these cities and have rolled out incentive programs for small-city resellers. The whole objective between now and end of March is to get our coverage right,” Nath said. The company has increased its marketing and channel development budget by almost 70 percent.

Intel Eyes Channel for Development Tools

Next on Intel’s agenda are its development tools. Taking a leaf from its global strategy, plans are underway to build an alternate software reseller channel—outside its core OEM and system builder channel—to offer the business a much needed push.

Intel’s software line consists of development tools such as Intel Parallel Studio, vTune performance analyzer, C++ compiler and Fortran compiler, and embedded and mobile software from acquisition Wind River Systems’ portfolio. The vendor also offers some of its tools as plug-ins of extensions for Microsoft Visual Studio.

“Our development tools business aims to provide enhanced integrated development environment (IDE) for software programmers,” said Phil De La Zerda, Director, Worldwide Sales and Business Development, Intel Developer Product Division.

“Since India is the software hub of the world, we see a huge market potential.” According to De La Zerda, sectors such as finance, banking, engineering, oil and gas, and manufacturing are currently looking for High Performance Computing and Communication (HPCC) solutions. “Development tools are critical to business. We want developers to create software optimized for latest Intel processors,” he said. “We want them to embrace parallel computing and multithreading, and thereby better the performance of their software. As we acquire more customers, we are laying foundation for multi-core technology.”

Intel India has already reported wins in several large R&D and educational establishments such as C-DAC, IIT, IGIB, TIFR and NCRA. “We also have several IT services companies on our radar, and are investing heavily in events and seminars focused on HPCC,” said De La Zerda.

“We believe that every Microsoft Visual Studio licensee is a potential buyer, and we want our partners to go after them,” De La Zerda added.

Kinfotech’s Kini Institutes Award

At the first ISODA Tech Summit 2011 being held in Bangkok, M Prabhakar Kini, Founder Managing Director of Bengaluru-based security and software solutions provider, Kinfotech announced the institution of the MP Kini Award for Business Excellence.

The award will be given away annually to a company for outstanding performance in the software reselling and solutions business. Kini presented the cheque of Rs 1,11,111 to Harinder Salwan, Secretary, ISODA for instituting the award, on the second day of the Tech Summit.

“The award will be given to a software partner who is rated the best not only in terms of business performance but also in terms of business practices and innovation. The process of selection of the winner will be done by an ISODA committee chaired by Kini. The winner will get a gold medal and a citation,” informed Kini.

The award for this year will be presented in April and ISODA members can nominate themselves or their peers for the same. “We will also call for nominations from outside ISODA membership and ask distributors and vendors to nominate their leading partners,” said he.

Commenting on his decision to institute the award, Kini said, “The software business has given me a lot—my first home, my first car, a lot of respect from vendors, peers and customers. This is my way of thanking the industry.”

Targus Technologies on a Global Expansion Drive

Delhi-based enterprise VAR, Targus Technologies is geared up to expand its footprints in markets across the globe and will target Australia, Japan, and Africa in 2011.

The company began its operations in Singapore by setting up an office in H2 2010.

Targus has set up a separate division to drive international business. “We have outlined an aggressive global expansion strategy with an aim to garner $1 million in international revenues by end of FY2011-12. In 2010, the volume of revenue generated from Singapore office was $1 million. Our plan is to enter into partnerships with like-minded international companies in order to boost our market proliferation,” said Balwinder Singh, Director, Targus Technologies.

For its global customers, Targus will offer remote infrastructure management services and systems integration services. The company already has a state-of-the-art remote infrastructure management center in Gurgaon.

ISODA Looks into the Future

At the recently concluded four-day Tech Summit, more than 100 software partners affiliated with the Infotech Software Dealers Association (ISODA) took home three key learning. One, they acknowledged that the current model of doing business is set for a change and that the resellers—the weakest link among the value chain—need to get united.

Two, ISODA as a body would work closely with Nasscom, MAIT, TAIT and other organizations for creating a stronger influence in lobbying for issues that affect channels; and third and the most important, never get married to one vendor but sell products from multiple vendors to increase scope and profitability.

According to Devesh Aggarwal, President, ISODA, the association’s message to transform, organize and protect has deeply penetrated the partners’ conscience. “Transform to sustain in this market, organize and collaborate and expand beyond existing geographies,” he said.

KV Jagannath, CEO, Choice Solutions, an ISODA member added that partners would need to enhance and leverage business opportunities in the existing customer base in the wake of large companies entering the SMB space.

The partners were joined by vendors such as CA Technologies, Quest, Netcore, Websense, Microdium, Trend Micro and Hitachi. In his presentation on Change or Die, Mahendra Negi, COO and CFO of Trend Micro concurred, said “Partners would have to remain relevant in view of changing distribution trends.”

Through his presentation Do Dooni Char, Vineet Sood, Director Channels and Alliances, Symantec spoke about the company’s new partner program and the hosting services that partners can offer their end customers.

Partners also discussed best practices and conducted an for setting goals for next year keeping in mind the various new technologies and concepts that are emerging in the marketplace. 

Some partners led the way and announced collaboration initiatives with each other. M Prabhakar Kini, MD, Kinfotech led the way. He said, “Following allegations that Kinfotech’s HR department had been poaching talent from Veeras Infotech, I have instructed the HR to first seek my permission before recruiting any personnel from Veeras.

Focusing on the grouse between resellers and distributors, Harinder Salwan, Secretary, ISODA said, “We have not yet broken ice with distributors. The message has to be sent that we are not enemies.”

The association has decided to form the ISODA Partner Advisory Council. It also announced to hold its next Tech Summit in Singapore from January 26-29, 2012.

Samriddhi Wants IT Partners For Surveillance

Samriddhi Automations is aggressively scouting for IT partners. The company plans to enroll more than 100 IT partners over the next six months.

The company plans to train IT resellers in analog technology as well. “While IP technology is the future, analog will continue to do well. Globally, IP is only 15 percent of the surveillance camera market. In India bandwidth and infrastructure constraints are hindering the growth of IP, which will take a couple of years to reach tipping point,” averred Sehgal.

The company expects 15 percent of its revenues to come from IT resellers in 2011. Samriddhi expects the government and banking sector to drive growth. “RBI has asked all banks to install IP-cameras at their branches and ATMs. With security threats increasing, the government is also investing in surveillance. The Indian Railways has announced deploying of cameras at all railway station over the next five years,” opined Sehgal.

Despite no well-defined partner program, Samriddhi offers pre-sales support, provides demo gears and regular training to partners. The company claims to have a customer base of over 10,000, which includes names like SBI, PNB, Allahabad Bank, Indian Oil, Airport Authority of India, Hero Honda, etc.
